Buddha Shakyamuni is the founder of the Buddhist tradition. Born a prince, he abandoned his kingdom, determined to find a solution for human suffering. He attained the state of enlightenment, and became a spiritual teacher in ancient India around 500 BCE. He is known with one hand in the mudra (hand gesture) of meditation, holding a begging bowl, symbolizing his lack of attatchment for worldly things. His other hand making the Abhaya mudra, offers blessings, His elongated ears symbolize wisdom, and his traditional robes show that he is practicing the moral discipline of a monk.
